Athlete of the Month
The August 2018 recipient of our Athlete of the Month Award is Steven Mickens from Raleigh Egypt High School
“Steven is the kind of student you want to teach, work with as a coach as well as one that makes you want to be better at your job."
Assistant Principal, Track Coach
As a senior at Overton High School, Steven Mickens truly exemplified self-discipline on and off the track. As a member of the Track & Field team, Steven emerged as one of his team’s leaders. Track coach Eric Brent says, “Steven is a natural born leader - I see Steven doing great things in his community and his future.” As a member of the Optional and Honors Program at Overton, he earned a 3.34 GPA. Amidst juggling sports and school, Steven managed to excel as a musician. As a 4-year Honors Piano student, Steven figured out the keys to success. He earned Excellent and Superior ratings in local and regional events. As a well-rounded scholar, Steven believes in the power of sports. “Sports provide an opportunity for kids to learn self-discipline, set goals as a team, and cooperate with others,” says Steven.
Now entering his freshman year at Berea College, Steven hopes to continue his stellar classroom performance as a Business Administration major with a minor in Marketing. Steven also plans to continue his track career as a member of the Berea Mountaineers' Men's Track & Field Team. In April, Steven was honored as one of our 3rd Annual Trey Rich Scholarship recipients! We believe his outstanding
commitment to being a well-rounded scholar-athlete will uphold the legacy of Elbert "Trey" Rich. Although he is entering new territory with new experiences awaiting him, Steven's mindset will ensure his success. His high school Piano Teacher, Detrina Odum, says, "He is self-motivated and sets high goals for himself in learning and achieving in order to be successful at any task."
We believe Steven will not only set high goals, but he will also achieve them. Best of luck Steven!
